Low Ionic Strength Saline (LISS)
It has been recognised since 1973 that enhanced antigen/antibody reactions could be obtained and a shorter incubation period could be employed when the red cells were suspended in a suitably prepared low ionic medium. Inverclyde LISS is prepared in keeping with the 'Guidelines for the Blood Transfusion Service'. pH is set at 6.7 ± 0.2, osmolarity 290 ± 5 mOsm/Kg and conductivity 3.7 ± 0.2 mS/cm.
