ABO-Index Preparation

ABO Index preparationFor the prediction of ABO Haemolytic Disease of the Newborn

A simple method for the prediction of ABO Haemolytic Disease of the Newborn (ABO HDN) has proved elusive despite technical advances over the years. ABO-Index tubes go some way to overcoming this problem and while a prediction of the severity of the disease cannot be achieved, an indication of the likelihood of an ABO incompatible pregnancy can. The presence of IgM as well as IgG ABO antibodies complicates the demonstration of raised levels of IgG anti-A, -B and/or -AB.

ABO-Index gel (each 1ml tube contains approximately 70% gel) will absorb the IgM fraction leaving the IgG fraction in the solution. When lightly spun the gel is precipitated to the lower half of the tube, taking with it the IgM ABO antibodies. The supernatant carrying the IgG ABO antibodies can then be titrated.
